This year the Adirondack Lynx will be increasing their player pool by adding a reserve team to the organization. On Friday December 29, tryouts were held at the Adirondack Sports Complex in Queensbury, NY. Four new members were added to a core group from the 2006 North East Divisional Champions. A number of players were also named to the reserve team.
The Adirondack Lynx have put some key pieces in place in order to add to their hopes of bringing home the WPSL national championship in 2007.
The team has re-signed the core group of players that brought them instant success in 2006. This group includes defenders: Kylie Litchfield, Hannah Cerrone, Jen Smith, Erin Flaherty, and Tricia Jaeger. Midfielders that will be returning are Jen Frisch, Amy Loughridge, Ashley McGuire, Chelsea Maguire and Caitlin Colfer. Forwards coming back are Ashley Moore, Mary Velan, De Wachtel, and Brooke Knowlton. Patti Carroll will be the returning Goalkeeper.
New players that will show up on the roster for 2007 include Lindsay Bove (Saint Rose), Heidi Reece (Saint Anselm), Lauren Mackay (Southern New Hampshire), and Eliza Whipple (Saint Rose) as well as a few other recruits that will be named at a later date.
General Manager, PJ Motsiff feels that the key to the Lynx succession 2007 will come from the support it gets from the newly formed reserve team. The reserve team is being added as a way to create a "competitive cauldron". Motsiff feels that every training session should put players on the edge of their comfort zone. WPSL players will be training alongside and against the reserve players throughout the season. This ultimately forces the level of the training sessions to new heights. Reserve players will be constantly getting looks to be placed on the WPSL roster. This will then push first team players to be at training in order to hold their positions there.
The Adirondack Lynx LLC aims to support women's soccer from youth to adult. The WPSL team is fully funded. Therefore all expenses will be paid. No player will be paid to play soccer because this would be an NCAA violation. However expenses such as training, game, pre-game meals, some player travel, as well as other necessary items that allow females to feel they are in a professional environment.
...[Coach] Motsiff feels that every training session should put players outside their comfort zone. The full team players will be training alongside, competing against the reserve players throughout the season.
This will ultimately bring the level of the training sessions to new heights. Reserve players will be constantly getting looks to be moved up and onto the full WPSL team roster as well as showing full team players who need to be moved down to the reserve squad. This competitive training formula should push all the Lynx players to be at training, and working hard in order to hold their respective team positions...”
The reserve team will train at the same times as the WPSL team on Monday and Wednesday evenings. The reserve players will be evaluated on an ongoing basis to determine if they are ready to be brought up to the WPSL team. In order to get this team up and running in 2007 a minimal administrative fee of $350 will be charged in order to cover basic fees (coaching, training facilities, player passes, etc. - uniforms are not covered in this cost).
Although more players will be named soon, the first round of players named to the lynx reserve team are: Sarah Makintosh, Meghan Garrity, Ilona Szotyori, Whitney Frary, Nikki Mazzoccone, Christina Boni, Cat Casolaro, Emily Bohn, Lindsay Curley, Courtney Gannon, Shannon Murphy, and Becca Lee.
A huge thank you to all of those players that tried out. Keep working toward your "goals."
The Adirondack Lynx compete in the Women’s Premier Soccer League ( WPSL ). The league is currently the highest level of women’s soccer in the United States and one of the top 5 women’s leagues in the world. There are 40 teams across the country. It is an amateur league therefore High School, College, and Open women can play together.
The Adirondack Lynx is owned by Peter Wirfel and managed/coached by PJ Motsiff. In 2006, their inaugural year, the Adirondack Lynx finished 7-3. That record gave the Lynx the 1st place in their division for the regular season. Along the way the Lynx beat #19 ranked (in the world) New England Mutiny and #8 ranked (in the world) Long Island Fury. The Lynx concluded their first season when they lost to the Long Island Fury in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Long Island then went on to claim the WPSL 2006 National Championship.
