The Adirondack Lynx today announced the signing of defenders Taryn Welker and Melissa Hagmire. The duo comes to Adirondack from Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire. This fall both of these outstanding players were starting defenders for every match for the FP Ravens as they helped their team to the NCAA Division 2 National Championship. Welker and Hagmire will join 2 of their already committed FP teammates this summer, English internationals Shona Franklin and Laura Stockdale.

Welker, a senior from Wayne, PA played in and started 24 matches as a defender for Franklin Pierce this year. She only scored one goal, but boy was it important! Taryn scored the game winner in a 2-0 win over undefeated Seattle Pacific to send Pierce to the 2007 National Championship.

“It is great to bring in defenders that are used to the pressure of big matches,” commented, General Manager PJ Motsiff. “Playing in the Eastern Conference of the WPSL will have many challenges this summer with the quality of the teams we will face. Players like Taryn will help us improve upon our 3 shutouts and 1.5 Goals Against average in 2007. We have no trouble scoring. In fact the last 2 seasons we have averaged over 2.5 goals per game. We need to keep it out of the back of the net on a more consistent basis. Welker will make an immediate impact and help us in this area."

Melissa Hagmire, Started all 25 matches for the Franklin Pierce Ravens. She helped lead the team to 17 shutouts en route to the 2007 Division 2 National Championship.

Hagmire, is a junior at Franklin Pierce and was one of only 6 players that started all 25 games for the ravens this past fall. Melissa is from the Rochester, NY area where there is a "hotbed" of top level soccer players.

“Mel did a fantastic job for her college team this past fall, and she will be another great addition to our team,” Motsiff said. “This year her team posted seventeen shutouts and did not give up a goal during the playoffs on their the way to the championship match.”

The Adirondack Lynx will open their preseason slate May 10, when they travel to play the University of Massachusetts. The Lynx will play the first game of the regular season at home against the New York Athletic Club on May 17.
