The Lynx lost their inaugural season opening away game to the Boston Aztecs 2 -1 at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta NY. Adirondack scored early and first, but then gave up two goals to a fast transitioning Boston team.
It only took 20 minutes to make Lynx history. Was it deja vu or what -- put All-American Tricia Jaeger on a field at the National Soccer Hall of Fame and she will take over -- whether it be with SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons or the Adirondack Lynx. It seems Jaeger has plans of continuing her reputation of scoring goals. Only this time it will be in the Women's Premier Soccer League instead of the NCAA.
In what could be there their last game together on the fields in Oneonta, Mary Velan and Laura Morcone joined Jaeger in showing why they earned many accolades in the SUNYAC college league the three played in.. Velan "hustled" for 90 minutes putting lots of pressure on the Aztecs defensively as well as offensively. Morcone gave up 2 quality Boston goals but had just as many amazing saves that could have ripped the twine.
...You can tell the players understand the game and know how to adapt. We totally dominated the second half, but were just unlucky and not able to find the back of the net. This team will be special once it works together a bit more.....” -Peter Wirfel, Team Owner
Although it was Jaeger that scored the goal, Hannah Cerrone, a U17 National Team member put on dribbling clinic the whole afternoon. "She certainly showed why she is one of the best in the United States at her age," said Lynx Coach PJ Motsiff.
Unfortunately, Carrie Holland took matters into her own hands against Adirondack. In a 10 minute span she scored two goals which held up all the way to the final whistle.
Team owner Peter Wirfel believes, "Considering how many of the college players had never played together - their improvement from the first five minutes to the last five was pretty amazing. You can tell the players understand the game and know how to adapt. We totally dominated the second half, but were just unlucky and not able to find the back of the net. This team will be special once it works together a bit more.", he noted.
Next game for the Lynx is on June 3 inside the Adirondack Sports Complex Dome at 7:30 pm. It's their home (and inaugural) season opener combined with a pre-game celebration called Soccerfest.
