Adirondack Shuts out Aztecs 2-0 in rematch

Mary Velan (Oneonta State) and Vanessa Patry (University of Massachusetts)  both collected goals in stoppage time to defeat the Boston Aztecs in the Women’s Premier Soccer League. The match was the second this season between the two clubs.  Adirondack had lost to the Aztecs 2-1 at the Soccer Hall of Fame on May 13th.  Patti Carrol (Siena College) earned her first shut-out as she was called upon to make 6 saves.

With a steady rain and strong wind throughout the match, the Lynx and the Aztecs seemed to be evenly matched.  The ball was primarily in the middle 1/3 of the field with a number of missed opportunities for both teams

With the scoreboard reading 45:00 and the referee adding stoppage time, Heather Garriock hit an indirect free kick that sailed into the box.  The ball was deflected and Mary Velan threw herself at the ball to get her head on it before Aztec keeper Brett Maron could get to it... GOAL!

In the second half Boston scored in the 74th minute only to find out that one of their players was in an offside position and the goal would not count.  As time was expiring...Adirondack was trying to delay the game the last few minutes by keeping possession of the ball.  As Vanessa Patry played the ball into the goal box, it was deflected by a Boston player and ended up in the back of the net.

In earning the shutout, the Lynx defense consisting of Kylee Litchfield (Saint Rose), Tricia Jaeger (Oneonta State), Meagan Clark (Nazareth College), and Jen Smith (Siena College) did an outstanding job of containing the Aztec attack.

The Lynx return to action next Saturday, June 17 when they face the Rhode Island Rays at 7 p.m. at the Clifton Commons in Clifton Park, NY. Prior to the game from 5:30-6:30 the Lynx will be having a Soccer Skillz Challenge for both boys and girls ages 6-14.  Players will be tested in 4 areas; juggling, dribbling, passing and shooting.  The finals will take place during half-time of the game.
