Clifton Park, NY - It took Adirondack's Australian World Cup player, Heather Garriock, all of 8 minutes to do what no other player in the WPSL has been able to do all season long-- score on the Long Island Fury. At 5-0-1 coming into the match, the Fury had not given up a goal in 630 minutes ( 7 games) and have scored an amazing 24 goals in that same time frame.

Sure enough, after Garriock scored her first, she did what world class players often do...take her game up one level higher, because, just four minutes later, Garriock then scored her second goal of the night, and the game winner to elevate the Lynx to 7-2-0 on the season in league play.

The Adirondack Lynx and Long Island Fury left no doubt in soccer fans minds why these two teams are at the top of the Eastern Division of the WPSL, one of the top women’s leagues in the world. With Long Island being made up of high-school and college All-Americans, US Youth National Team pool members, as well as Irish National Team members and Adirondack having a similar make-up, but instead of internationals from Ireland, they have the Australians.

Garriock’s first goal was a classic... about 30 yards outside of the Fury goalmouth the ball was being headed about in the air, so she started to make a run to the near post while screaming to her Australian teammate, Danielle Small, to flick the ball on with her head over the defense. Small hit it perfectly, and Garriock then tucked her shot away low, and underneath the sprawling Fury keeper.”

The Fury, held a 12-8 advantage in shots on the game. However, the difference in the game was the confidence boost that Heather Garriock created when she put the Lynx up 2-0 at the 15 minute mark. Garriock’s first goal was a classic... about 30 yards outside of the Fury goalmouth the ball was being headed about in the air so she started to make a run to the near post while screaming at her Australian teammate, Danielle Small, to flick the ball on with her head over the defense. Lynx Keeper Patti Carroll saved 8 shots on goal many of them under intense Fury pressure in the last 10 minutes.

Patti Carroll tees up a second half goal kick. Carroll made 8 brilliant saves for the Lynx in beating the Long Island Fury 2-1. She and the Lynx defense held a very potent Fury team, who were averaging almost 4 goals a game, to just 1 on the evening. Carroll turned back shot after shot under intense pressure during the final 10 minutes of the game.

Just seven minutes later, Garriock picked up her next goal as she sent in a cross from the 18 yard box that deflected off a Fury leg and went into the goal. That was when Becky Wachsberger, keeper for the Fury committed herself to no more. She single-handedly stopped Garriock from getting her 3rd goal of the night 10 minutes later by diving to get her hand and deflecting a rocket that was headed for the back of the net. Moments later she had a repeat type of save, as CJ Ludemann (U17 National Team player, headed to Duke) hit another blistering Lynx shot that Wachsberger stopped from sneaking into the upper 90 by putting her body horizontal 3 feet in the air.

Long Island did not let the 2 goal lead effect their game plan. They continued their organized and potent attack (the team is averaging 3.42 goals a game). However, the Adirondack defense stepped up big time and left the Fury having to shoot from 25-30 yards out throughout the first half.

The second half was a bit different though as the Fury were getting in behind the Lynx defense and creating a number of offensive opportunities. In the last 15 minutes, the Lynx keeper, Patti Carroll proved why she was on the Freshman All-Conference team at Siena College. She was on her game and made a number of amazing stops to keep the upstate NY team ahead of their downstate rivals. Especially in the last 10 minutes as the Fury kept putting dangerous balls into the Lynx goal box. Carroll finished the night with 8 saves, but every one of them was brilliant.

In the 83rd minute Shannon Donovan put some fear in the Lynx eyes as she headed in a Marie Curtin corner kick. The rest of the way it was up and down the field as the Lynx were trying to dribble and hold the ball in their offensive end to run the clock out. The Fury were pushing to get the equalizer but time just ran out on them.

With the win, the Adirondack Lynx have all but secured themselves a post season bid by remaining in first place in the Eastern Conference of the WPSL.

The Lynx have one more regular season game in Pennsylvania against the F.C. Laurels on Sunday, July 16. Should the Lynx remain in first place they will host the second place team of the Southern Division on Friday July 22. The finals of the Eastern Conference will be held on Sunday July 24 at the home of the team with the best record. The Eastern Conference winner will then head to Utah for the WPSL Championships on July 28-29.
