Friday, August, 2006 - The highest level of women’s soccer in the United States returns for the last time this season to the Capital Region. Friday, July 21st at 7:00 p.m. at the Clifton Commons in Clifton Park, NY, the Adirondack Lynx (7-3, #1 seed in the WPSL Northern Division of the Eastern Conference) will host the Northampton Laurels (6-2-2, #2 seed in the WPSL Southern Division of the Eastern Conference) in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Eastern Conference Semifinals. In their last meeting, Northampton defeated Adirondack by a 2-1 score in Allentown, PA.

Northampton Laurels: Northampton is a 2006 expansion team from Easton, PA. They finished the season 5-2-2, which earned them a second place regular season finish in the Southern Division of the Eastern Conference of the WPSL. The Laurels are coached by Wayne Grocott, he is a native of London, England and previously coached with the established South Jersey Banshees in the USL W-league. The Laurels are led by their captain, Gina Lewandowsky. The midfielder currently plays for Lehigh University and scored the first goal on the Lynx this past Sunday. Another player to watch will be Trinidad and Tobago international Kennya Cordner, she is a speedy, creative forward that also scored on the Lynx in their last meeting. Maylee Attin-Johnson will also add to the high level of play as she was a member of the Trinidad and Tonbago Women’s National Team.

Adirondack Lynx: Adirondack is also a 2006 expansion team from the Albany, NY area. The Lynx finished the season at 7-3 and in first place of the very strong northern division of the Eastern Conference of the WPSL. In order to get the #1 seed, the Lynx have had to play some outstanding soccer. They beat the #19 internationally ranked, New England Mutiny on the road 3-2. They also knocked off a very established soccer club team, the Long Island Fury, who were undefeated and unscored upon at the time. The Lynx are coached by PJ Motsiff, who holds his coaching certificate through the NSCAA. Last year Motsiff, coached his U19 Black Watch, N.Y. Super Y team to an undefeated season (9-0-1) and into the National Super Y Finals. The Lynx are led by Danielle Small, an Australian international who played in the last Olympics and World Cup for her native land. Players also to watch are Kylee Litchfield (The College of Saint Rose), Ashley Clinton (Clifton Park - Nazareth), Jen Smith (Clifton Park – Siena) and Tricia Jaeger (All American - Oneonta State) who anchor the defensive line. Midfielders, CJ Ludemann (U17 National team, Duke), Jen Frisch (Saratoga, U. of Central Conn.), and De Wachtel (Guilderland, The College of Saint Rose) provide very crisp passing in order to connect the defense and offense. Forwards Mary Velan (All-American – Oneonta State), Jenny Petronis, (Burnt Hills, All-American – Franklin Pierce) Brooke Knowlton (Niskayuna, U17 National team pool) and Ashley Moore (U17 National team, UNC) should light up the nets. The Goalkeeping position has been split by two locals who have done a phenomenal job, Laura Morcone (Mechanicville, Oneonta State) and Patty Carroll (Galway, Siena).

The winner will move on to the upcoming WPSL Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday, July 23. The location will depend on the teams that make the finals. The other two teams in the semifinals are the second place team from the Northern Division, the Long Island Fury and the #1 seed from the Southern Division, the AC Diablos (Atlantic City, NJ). Should the Lynx win their semifinal game and Long Island wins, the finals will be held at 2:00pm at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, NY. If Atlantic City wins, Adirondack will travel to the Diablos for the final. On the line this weekend is a trip to Salt Lake City, Utah for the National Finals of the WPSL on July 28 and 29.

Tickets are available at the gate for the semifinal match. Prices are $5 for adults, $3 for youth and Free for children under 5.
