Lynx win home opener inside 'The Dome' with a bang, beating Maryland 4-1

The Adirondack Lynx used an explosive offense and smothering defense on their way to a 4-1 win over the Maryland Pride in their "Dome Opener". The Lynx showed off an international flair with the addition of Heather Garriock and Danielle Small from the 2004 Australian Olympic team. Garriock led the way on offense with two goals and Small was part of a Lynx defense that turned back Pride attacks all night, Lynx goalkeepers Patti Carroll and Laura Morcone faced only three shots all night.
The Lynx were on the scoreboard first in the fourth minute after Mary Velan took a cross from Ashley Moore and got behind the Pride defense for the first WPSL goal in the Dome. Garriock added to the Lynx lead fifteen minutes later when she picked up a loose ball at the 18 yard line and blasted a shot past the 17 year old Pride keeper Sarah Mather. The only blemish on the Lynx scorecard came in the first half's final minute of play when the Pride's Jessica Young outpaced two defenders and put the ball behind keeper Carroll.
Early in the second half Hannah Cerrone showed why she is one of the top-10 U-17 players in the country after she put the Lynx on top 3-1 with a beauty of an unassisted goal. Garriock than added her second goal of the night when she slotted a free kick from 20 yards out to put the game out of reach. The Australian's attempt at a hat trick in her first appearance for the Lynx sailed just past the left post as she came crashing to the net in an attempt to convert a Cerrone cross. Saturday night was the first of back-to-back matches for the Lynx this weekend. Sunday they travel to Massachusetts to face the Massachusetts Stingers. They will return to the Capital District to face the RI Rays in Clifton Park at the Clifton Commons on June 17th at 7:00PM.
