A defensive meltdown, concentration lapse, and no pressure own goal by the visiting Rhode Island Rays backfield in the last minutes of the first half gave the Lynx enough momentum to take a 2-1 win in their Saturday evening WPSL match up in Clifton Park, NY.
Ashley Moore (Shenendehowa H.S.) then drove home the 18 yard game winner just five minutes later in the second half on a Hannah Cerrone (Roy C. Ketcham H.S.) assist to complete the Lynx scoring. The Lynx win takes the team to 3-2 on the season, and bumps them up to 3rd in the WPSL Eastern Conference standings.
Moore and Cerrone, who are both recent selections to the 2006 Parade High School ALL-American team, again proved why they are 2 of the best young players in the United States. The two women teamed up perfectly 2 minutes into the second half to score what turned out to be the game winning goal against the Rays. Cerrone dribbled past a defender on the left flank and played a perfect ball onto Moore’s feet at the top of the 18 yard box. Even though she was tightly marked, Moore turned the ball quickly and drove a clean hard shot that streaked past the keeper into the right upper 90.
Earlier, in the closing minutes of the first half, the Lynx got on the scorecard first, when Amanda Arcuri (Syracuse University) hit a low 27 yard cross into the middle of the goal box from the right flank. With no Adirondack players anywhere near the ball, it deflected off a Rhode Island defender, slowly rolling into their own net with under 2 minutes left in the first half. Certainly not a pretty goal for the highlight reels, but it altered the momentum of the match going into the half time break -- and it was less than 5 game minutes later, that Moore and Cerrone got the game winner.

A'dack's Mary Valen (#13 white) moves past a late arriving slide tackle by Vanessa DiPaolo (#24). With her defender sprawled on the ground behind her, Valen then ripped a shot on goal, that just missed wide.
The Rhode Island Rays had their best opportunity to score midway through the first half. A Rhode Island shot zipped over the Adirondack Goalkeeper, Laura Morcone’s (SUNY Oneonta) head for a sure goal. Out of nowhere, back Tricia Jaeger (SUNY Oneonta) flew in behind Morcone and strongly headed the ball clear off towards touch, saving a certain Rays score. (watch the video clip of Jaeger's save)
In the 85th minute the Rays scored their only goal of the match as a ball was knocked over the Lynx defense, and Sibhon McCaffery tracked it down and was able to put it away into the netting.
The Lynx play again next Saturday, June 24 against the New York City Athletic Club at 7 p.m. at the Clifton Commons in Clifton Park, NY.
Prior to the game from 5:00-6:00pm the Adirondack Lynx World Cup and Olympic players Heather Garriock and Danielle Small will be hosting a training clinic for youth players. Both boys and girls ages 6-14 are invited to attend. Players should bring their own ball. A $3 charge will include admission to the clinic as well as the Lynx game.
