In 2005 Mary did not skip a beat as she moved from being a freshman to her sophmore year. Both sesaons earned her some serious looks as she played for the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta (2005 Final NCAA Poll Ranked #6). Velan was a first team NCAA All-Region selection. This made her elegible for the NSCAA/adidas Women's Division III All-American team where she got a spot on the third team. For Velan it marks the second year in a row in which she has earned third team All-American honors.

Velan is a lightning quick forward with no fear of positioning herself to win 50/50 balls. She will often run onto balls that no one thought possible and turn what looked like a missed play into a dangerous situation for her opponents.
This past fall Velan finished the season with 45 points on 17 goals and 11 assists. In the SUNYAC Conference her 17 goals was 3rd in the league and 11 assists was #1 in the league. In only her sophomore season, Velan is already tied for third on the all-time points list with 83 in just two seasons of play. Also in 2005 she was named to the SUNYAC All-Conference first team and NYSWCAA All-State team.
